A simple guide to visit Raya Island (Racha Island)

Are you looking to travel to Raya Island? Well, it is one of the Islands in Phuket Thailand known to offer the best watersport. In this guide, we simplify you the best things to do, where to stay at Raya Island, and give you how weather overview to know the best time to travel to Raya Island. Read on to find out!

The Racha Islands are best known in Thailand as excellent destinations for diving and snorkeling. Racha Noi is uninhabited, located some 12 km south of Phuket, however, there’s some superb diving in the area. Racha Yai has several bungalows and resorts if you want to spend a day or more on the IslandIsland.

Racha Yai elegantly reveals herself, with most arrivals landing on a magnificent white-sand strip found deep into the long, U-shaped like central bay, known as Ao Tawan Tok or Ao Bungalow. The waters at Raya Island are bright and excellent for snorkeling, though, in the afternoons, the bay becomes quite busy with visiting boats. Racha Yai is the home of a beautiful getaway resort, The Racha. The other big bay, Ao Siam, is a lovely place where you can go for a peaceful stroll.

Ko Racha Yai also is known as Ko Raya Yai, and Ko Raya Noi is twin islands off Phuket’s southeast coast. Such islands have been known for their crystal clear blue waters for years and have been an almost exclusive paradise for divers. Racha Yai is rising in popularity with the white sand beaches and expanding lodging from Racha Yai.

Raya island snorkeling

Snorkeling is an enjoyable way to see the underwater wonders of Phuket if you don’t like diving or just don’t have the time to do a dive course. An additional bonus for snorkeling is that you have a better chance to see fish, as the bubbles from the aqualungs can scare them away.

You will enjoy snorkeling by merely renting a mask, snorkeling, and fins from a nearby dive shop and swimming in one of the reefs on the west coast of Phuket (not recommended during the rainy season). The area between Koh Pu and Kata Beach is one of the best snorkeling spots without a boat that you can enter.

Other excellent reef beaches include Kata Noi and Laem Singh. Also worthy of consideration are Paradise Beach and Freedom Beach, and are just a short longtail boat ride from Patong.

Charter a longtail boat from Rawai to one of the offshore reefs and islands, like Coral Island (Koh Hae), for healthier coral. Alternatively, most tour companies offer day trips to some of the neighboring islands, such as Phi Phi, including snorkeling. If you stay at Phi Phi Don, you can charter boats from Ton Sai Beach to nearby spots like Maya Bay or Bamboo Island.

Most of the dive trips and liveaboards have space for non-divers, which means you can go snorkeling along. Also, rates for non-divers are half that.

Racha Yai diving

Racha Yai offers, for many years now, some of the best local dive sites year, but the season visibility varies. Two lovely little bays are known for their deep clear water and vibrant coral formations on the north end of the IslandIsland.

Both have almost swimming pool features as they gradually drop to a depth of 40 feet on a sandy seabed, providing ample opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving. The best dive is off the east coast, where the current makes a gentle dive along this unique sloping rocky face, covered with a fantastic array of hard corals, and the nutrient-rich water attracts large schools of tropical fish.

Racha Yai Island isn’t big-about 3.5 km long and 1.5 km wide, but it’s big enough to provide cover on windy days, which means we can dive there any time of year. There are about 6 “called” dive sites all around the IslandIsland, most of which are on the east coast, making Racha Yai a great place to dive when winds blow from the west during our low season.

There are two wide bays on the north side of the IslandIsland which give shelter to boats in either west or east wind. Student divers commonly dive bungalow Bay, it is shallow, and it has limited currents. Siam Bay has some deeper water, but for the first time, divers can also be dived at 10 meters.

At around 18 meters in Siam Bay, you can find several statues that were placed in the bay, during the your 2006, including a couple of giant elephants The east coast features several shallow bays joined by a sloping reef that drops in places to about 25 meters.

New divers can dive at depths of 5–10 meters in the bays, while more experienced divers can jump off the boat to the main reef, which is mostly coral staghorn. It might not be the best reef in the world, but marine life at Racha Yai is very healthy. You will be able to see Lionfish, scorpionfish, and small blue spotted stingrays, barracuda, bannerfish, morays, and much more can be seen on an average dive.
