The King Cruiser was originally an 85 meter passenger ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi Island. On the 4th May 1997 the King Cruiser strayed off course and hit the Anemone Reef. The ship sunk in less than an hour with all passengers making it safely off. Now the King Cruiser provides the Phuket diving community with a great wreck with a huge amount of marine life to investigate. Huge schools of lion fish, rare nudibranch’s and sometimes the odd turtle. The wreck itself is interesting, but slowly collapsing over the years, making it not safe to go inside. However there is plenty to discover as you swim along this big wreck. You can join boats to travel to RaYa Yai and Raya Noi islands.
The Phuket fisherman call it Hin Musang. The Phuket diving community calls it Shark Point, which consists of a series of seven pinnacles, due to the frequent Leopard Shark sightings. The area was awarded the status of a Marine Sanctuary back in 1991. Shark Points main pinnacle, known as number 1, just peaks out of the water. Most of the diving takes place around here and on pinnacle number 2. The pinnacles are covered in soft corals with and presents plenty of colorful marine life. Look out for the large gorgonian fans, soft corals, an abundance of mushroom coral, seahorses, sand dwelling leopard sharks, bamboo sharks all make up for scuba diving here a wonderful experience not to be missed.
Koh Doc Mai which means “Flower Island” in Thai language. The Island Koh Doc Mai is huge submerged limestone rock. On the West side you find a gentle slopping reef and on the East side a wall. Sometimes its overlooked by divers because of the occasionally bad visibility and strong currents. However this is wrong, as this is one of the best diving sites in Thailand for the avid macro enthusiast. Most of the Phuket diving community tends to be focused on the East side of Koh Doc Mai, where you find as well two large caverns. In the entrance area you will be able to find some very unusual marine life such as seahorses, frog fish, white eyed moray eels, sea snakes, and pipe-fish. The island has it all. Look out for the many different nudibranch’s around the 5 meter mark, which makes even safety stop interesting!
