Is Phang Nga Bay Big Boat Tour Better Than a Speedboat Ride?
For $48 you get two rounds of sea cave canoeing, lunch cooked on deck, free paddleboards and your park fees paid, all on the steadiest boat in Phang Nga Bay.
Is Phang Nga Bay Big Boat Tour Better Than a Speedboat Ride? For families, older travelers and anyone prone to seasickness, usually yes. Our big boat starts at $48, takes you sea cave canoeing twice and serves lunch on board. The speedboat starts at $58 and fits more stops into the day: Panak, James Bond Island, Koh Panyee and Naka Island.
Guests ask me all the time: is Phang Nga Bay big boat tour better than a speedboat ride? My answer depends on who’s in your group. Whichever boat you pick, book 24 to 48 hours ahead, because popular dates sell out.
Short answer: Usually yes, if you want a steadier ride and more time in a canoe. Pick the speedboat if you want more island stops in one day.
Our Phang Nga Bay big boat tour is the calmer, roomier way to reach James Bond Island, and it’s the one I suggest first for mixed groups. You get two sessions of sea cave canoeing at Panak and Hongs islands, and local paddlers do the rowing while you look up at the cave ceilings. Lunch is served on deck. At Nakae Island the paddleboards are free.
The big boat works for most people because this bay is about the scenery, and going faster doesn’t show you more of it. My advice flips when you want lunch at the Koh Panyee floating village and a swim at Naka Island on the same day. Only the speedboat route covers both.
Practical answer: Say you’re staying in Phuket with one free day and you want James Bond Island without a bumpy ride. Book the big boat (from $48) for two canoe sessions and lunch on deck. Book the speedboat (from $58) for more stops, with the boat back at the marina between 4:30 and 5:00 PM. National park fees are always included with us, and so are hotel transfers.
Is Phang Nga Bay Big Boat Tour Better Than a Speedboat Ride? Your Phuket Options
You can join one of two group tours, or book a private boat.
- Big boat from Ao Po Pier: Your guide checks you in at Ao Po Pier at around 09:00. The boat holds 80 passengers but carries no more than 65 per trip. It’s the one I’d pick for grandparents, young kids and anyone who goes green on choppy water.
- Premium speedboat from Royal Phuket Marina: You start with a light breakfast at check-in. Then the boat visits Panak, Khao Phing Kan, a buffet lunch at Panyee, canoeing through the mangroves at Hong, the ice cream caves and Naka Island, all listed on our premium James Bond Island speedboat page. It suits couples and groups of friends who’d rather see more islands than sit still.
- Private boats: A private longtail James Bond tour starts at $61. A private speedboat with Naka Island starts at $83. Both make sense when your group wants to set its own timing.
The big boat doesn’t moor at James Bond Island itself. For the last stretch you move into a longtail boat, and that ride is already in your ticket, so nobody charges you for it at the pier.
How Much Does Each Phang Nga Bay Tour Cost?
These are the starting prices per adult in USD:
| Tour | From (USD) | Pier and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Big boat | $48 | Ao Po Pier, 7 to 8 hours |
| Premium speedboat | $58 | Royal Phuket Marina, back at the pier 4:30 to 5:00 PM |
| Private longtail | $61 | Arranged around your group |
| Private speedboat with Naka | $83 | Arranged around your group |
Prices move with the date, and our James Bond Island tours page shows the live figures. On the big boat, children under 11 and infants under 3 pay their own rates, which show up once you pick a date.
Can You Join From Northern Phuket and Still Make the Morning Departure?
Yes. On the speedboat schedule we pick up from Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon, Layan, Bang Tao, Laguna and Surin between 08:00 and 08:20. That covers resorts like JW Marriott Phuket, Banyan Tree Phuket, Angsana Laguna, Dusit Thani Laguna, Anantara Layan, Trisara, Amanpuri, InterContinental Phuket and Hyatt Regency Phuket. Kamala pickups run from 07:40 to 08:00.
If you stay further south, your morning starts earlier. Pickups are at 07:00 to 07:10 in Rawai and Nai Harn (The Nai Harn, SUNSURI PHUKET, The VIJITT), 07:20 to 07:40 in Kata and Karon, and 07:30 to 07:50 at Cape Panwa and Ao Makham, according to our speedboat pickup times. For the big boat, pickup starts at around 07:00. If you’d rather get to Ao Po on your own, be there by 09:00.
A useful tip: If you stay at Cape Yamu, Laem Hin or near Ao Po, you get the latest pickup window, 08:30 to 08:50. Flying out the same day? Send us your flight time. We suggest booking a flight no earlier than 21:30.
Are Seniors, Pregnant Travelers and Babies Allowed on the Speedboat?
No. The premium speedboat doesn’t take pregnant women, guests over 65, guests with a disability, or infants under 1 year. These guests should book the big boat, which is our most family and elderly friendly tour. If you use a wheelchair, contact us before booking so we can confirm you can board.
Should You Book the Big Boat or the Speedboat?
Book the big boat if your group spans several ages, if anyone gets seasick, or if canoeing is the part you care most about. Two canoe sessions are more than most bay tours include.
Pick the speedboat if everyone is under 65, nobody minds sea spray, and you want lunch at Panyee plus a swim at Naka.
Still not sure? Send us everyone’s ages and your hotel name, and we’ll check which departure has seats. Live dates and child prices are on our James Bond Island big boat tour page if you’d like to look now.
The Slow Boat Wins? Is Phang Nga Bay Big Boat Tour Better Than a Speedboat Ride for Your Crew
Is Phang Nga Bay big boat tour better than a speedboat ride when you count what happens on the boat between stops? Our crew teaches you to make khanom khrok, a Thai coconut dessert, and runs a daily Bingo game on the way back to Ao Po. The Ko Tapu rock you came to see stays the same as it was in the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun. What changes is how your day on the water feels.
Key takeaways: Big boat from $48 with two canoe sessions. Speedboat from $58 with more stops. Over 65, pregnant or travelling with a baby? Book the big boat. Park fees and hotel transfers come with both.

My Take: Pick the Boat That Fits the Oldest and Youngest in Your Group
The bay looks the same from either boat. Who’s on board is what matters. A boat with 65 passengers on deck is a different day from 30 people holding on in a speedboat, and the right one depends on your group, not on price.
Your next steps:
- Count everyone’s ages. If anyone is over 65, pregnant or under 1, book the big boat.
- Look at your hotel’s pickup window in the times above.
- Book 24 to 48 hours ahead at least.
- Fill in your Thailand Digital Arrival Card before you fly.
- Pack a swimsuit, a towel, sunblock and shoes with grip.
