Bamboo Island Day Trip from Phuket: Can You Visit Bamboo Island Without Staying Overnight on Phi Phi Don? Yes, Visit Bamboo Island, Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Phi Phi Don by Speedboat with Hotel Transfers and Same-Day Return
Heart-like sandbar, clownfish in waist-high water, and back at your Phuket pool by 6:30 PM: one speedboat day, zero island hotel nights, national park fees already paid.
Can you visit Bamboo Island without staying overnight on Phi Phi Don? Yes. After more than 200 runs out there, I’d tell almost anyone to do it as a day trip from Phuket. Koh Mai Phai sits about 5 km off Phi Phi Don’s northern tip, close enough that a speedboat fits it into the same loop as Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Monkey Beach.
Today is 1 October 2026, and the Maya Bay reopening happened this morning after the yearly August and September closure, so the full circuit is running again. When you book with us, the 400 baht park fee is already in your ticket.
So can you visit Bamboo Island without staying overnight on Phi Phi Don and still get proper time on the sand? Mostly, yes. The rest of this page covers the timing, the tradeoffs and the booking window you can’t skip.
The Practical Answer, Up Front Yes. Bamboo Island works as a same-day trip from Phuket. On our Premium speedboat tour, the hotel pickup window runs from about 7:00 to 9:00 AM depending on your area. Bamboo Island gets the afternoon block from roughly 1:30 to 4:30 PM, and you’re back at your hotel around 6:00 to 6:30 PM. National park fees are always included. Reserve 24 to 48 hours ahead.

No Hotel Booking Required: Why Bamboo Island Is a Day-Tripper’s Island
Bamboo Island is small. It’s roughly 600 by 700 meters, flat, ringed by white sand and covered in casuarina trees and bamboo. There are no cliffs and no viewpoint hike. If you’re asking whether you can visit Bamboo Island without staying overnight on Phi Phi Don, that size is your answer: nothing here needs a second day.
The reef is the real draw. You can swim out comfortably to about 50 meters from shore and float over clownfish tucked into anemones. Kids shriek when they spot one. So do retirees, honestly.
The island sits inside Phi Phi Islands National Park, which is why there’s a park fee to step onto it. One habit I’ve picked up: the shade under the casuarinas fills fast after lunch, so I tell guests to drop their towels first and snorkel second.
Can You Visit Bamboo Island Without Staying Overnight on Phi Phi Don? The Hour-by-Hour Answer
How the Day Runs From Your Hotel Door
This is the daily run sheet our guides carry, give or take the tide:
- About 7:00 to 9:00 AM: minivan pickup (the exact slot depends on your area), then a soft breakfast at the marina lounge.
- 9:00 AM: speedboat briefing, cold drinks, and off toward Phi Phi.
- Morning: Monkey Beach, Viking Cave, snorkeling in Pileh Lagoon, a stop at Maya Bay, and a buffet lunch at a halal restaurant on Phi Phi Don.
- About 1:30 to 4:30 PM: Bamboo Island for swimming, snorkeling and beach time.
- 4:30 to 5:30 PM: the ride back to Phuket, then your transfer to the hotel.
Item three surprises people. You do set foot on Phi Phi Don, just without a suitcase.
Why the Order Sometimes Flips
The sea around Phi Phi rises and falls by 2.7 to 3 meters every day, and the beaches grow and shrink with it. Some days Bamboo Island comes earlier because the reef gets too shallow to snorkel at low water. Your guide makes that call at the pier, based on the tide that day.
What’s New This Month: Maya Bay Is Back, With Rules
All of September my inbox asked one thing: is Maya Bay open yet? As of today, yes. A few rules haven’t moved:
- No swimming in Maya Bay. Swimming remains prohibited under park conservation rules, so you do your snorkeling at Bamboo Island and Pileh Lagoon.
- Capped numbers. The park admits up to 375 people per hour onto the beach, in rotating slots.
- Sunscreen checks. Products containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4MBC or butylparaben can bring fines of up to 100,000 baht in Thai national parks. Pack a reef-safe sunscreen.
- October weather. It’s the tail of the wet season, averaging around 315 mm of rain over about 19 rainy days, with the sea near 29 C.
That last point is why I steer October guests toward a day trip. If the swell picks up, a day tour gets rescheduled and you’ve lost nothing. A prepaid bungalow on Phi Phi Don won’t refund you.
Sleeping on Phi Phi Don vs. Riding Home: The Real Tradeoffs
I like Phi Phi Don at night. Tonsai Village hums with longtail engines and bar music. But when couples ask whether they can visit Bamboo Island without staying overnight on Phi Phi Don, what they want to know is whether they’ll miss anything. For Bamboo Island alone, they won’t.
- Where the day trip wins: you keep one hotel, nobody carries luggage onto a boat, park fees are paid in advance, and pickup is at your door.
- Where the overnight wins: sunrise on the water, an early start before the Phuket boats arrive, and an evening in Tonsai.
- The cost nobody counts: even if you sleep on Phi Phi Don, you still need a separate longtail or tour to reach Bamboo Island, because it’s offshore.
Can You Visit Bamboo Island Without Staying Overnight on Phi Phi Don From Northern Phuket?
Yes. Our transfers cover Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon, Layan, Bang Tao, Laguna Phuket, Surin, Pansea Beach and Kamala. Resort pickups include JW Marriott Phuket, Banyan Tree Phuket, Angsana Laguna, Dusit Thani Laguna, Saii Laguna, Anantara Layan, Trisara, Amanpuri, InterContinental Phuket and Hyatt Regency Phuket.
The east side is covered as well: Cape Panwa, Panwa Peninsula, Ao Yon, Koh Sirey, Rassada, Phuket Town, Chalong Bay, Ao Makham, Cape Yamu and Laem Hin, with hotels like Veranda Resort Phuket (Autograph Collection), Hotel Tide Phuket, Baan Panwa Resort and Spa, So View Phuket Resort, Craft Resort and Villas and The Passion Nest. Mai Khao pickups run 08:00 to 08:20, while Panwa Cape starts at 07:30.
The Tour I’d Put My Own Family On
If you want the full circuit in one day, the Premium Phi Phi Bamboo Island tour is the one I run most. Your speedboat day trip price covers:
- Hotel transfers both ways, plus breakfast at the marina
- Speedboat, captain, crew and an English-speaking guide
- Snorkel masks, buoyancy vests and insurance
- Buffet lunch, soft drinks, coffee, tea and water
- National park fees, always included with us
Fins aren’t in the package, but you can rent fins for 200 baht at the lounge if you want them.
There’s one bit of admin before you land. You can submit the TDAC arrival card up to 72 hours before entry on the immigration bureau’s site. Then reserve your seat 24 to 48 hours ahead, because these boats sell out. I’d rather not be the one telling you at 9 PM that tomorrow’s boat is full.
Other Ways Out to Bamboo Island
- Phi Phi sunrise speedboat tour: An early departure for people who mind crowds more than alarm clocks.
- Phi Phi catamaran tour: A steadier hull and more deck space, which helps if you get seasick.
- Phi Phi and Khai Island speedboat tour: Adds Khai’s shallow sandbars, which families with small kids love.
- Phi Phi cruiser day tour: A big boat with fewer bumps and a longer crossing.
- Bamboo Island tour from Khao Lak: Staying up in Khao Lak? This version starts there.
- Phuket to Phi Phi speedboat transfer: If you do decide to sleep on Phi Phi Don, this gets you and your bags there.
- Bamboo Island snorkeling blog: A short post from our team about snorkeling Bamboo Island with us.
The Short Version, One More Time
Can you visit Bamboo Island without staying overnight on Phi Phi Don? Yes. It’s small, flat and offshore, and a Phuket speedboat reaches it during the afternoon of a standard Phi Phi loop.
Maya Bay reopened on 1 October 2026. Swimming is still banned there, visitor numbers are capped and sunscreen rules are strict.
October still brings rain, so a day tour you can reschedule is less of a gamble than a prepaid island bungalow. Our Premium tour bundles pickup, lunch, snorkel gear and park fees into one price.
Reserve 24 to 48 hours ahead, and file your TDAC before you fly.
Last Word From Someone Who’s Made This Run 200-Plus Times
The first time a guest asked me whether they could visit Bamboo Island without staying overnight on Phi Phi Don, I said yes without thinking. Two hundred trips later my answer is the same. I just have more reasons now. My favorite Bamboo Island moment comes around 3 PM, floating over the reef edge while the guide whistles everyone back in twenty minutes. You don’t need a hotel room for that.
What it boils down to: Bamboo Island is a day trip, Maya Bay is open again but you can’t swim there, and October weather favors plans you can move.
Your plan:
- Pick a date early in your holiday so there’s room to reschedule if the weather turns.
- Reserve 24 to 48 hours ahead.
- Confirm your pickup hotel. Your guide’s and transfer team’s phone numbers come by email.
- File your TDAC, then pack reef-safe sunscreen, a swimsuit and a towel.
- Got questions? Contact our Phuket team and we’ll answer them.
Looking ahead, the next Maya Bay closure would start on 1 August 2027 if the park keeps its usual schedule. So the window from now through July is wide open.
